Creating a flourishing garden is a joyful journey, especially with the right tips in hand. For urban gardeners, it's all about knowing your plant zone, understanding sun exposure, and planning your watering needs. With these essentials, you can cultivate a thriving, stress-free garden that brings beauty and tranquility to your urban space. Let's dive into the joy of gardening and make your garden dreams come true!

Find Your Planting Zone

Before you set off to the garden center you must know your plant zone.  What's a plant zone? Every zip code in the country has a number assigned to it called a plant zone. This number is tied to the climate in your area, like how hot or cold it gets, and when frost might sneak up on your plants.

By knowing your plant zone, you can pick out plants that will love the weather where you live, thrive in your climate, and avoid any garden heartbreaks. So, google your plant zone by zip code or use the plant zone finder that I use guide you to green thumb success!

Understand These Two Main Ingredients

Sun and water are like the dynamic duo! When planning the type of plants you want in your space, be sure to consider the sun's path and how you'll be getting water to your plants.

Plants have their own unique needs when it comes to sun exposure. Some thrive in bright, direct sunlight, while others prefer a bit of shade to keep cool.

Tip: An easy way to discover how much sun will be available to your plants is to walk around your yard at 8am, Noon, and 4pm. Look at where the sun is hitting your space at each time, commit it to memory or write it down.

The sun might be in your backyard in the morning and not in the front yard, and then switch in the evening. Is a large tree blocking the sun causing shade?  Without understanding sun exposure, you could choose the wrong plant for your space, causing it struggle or die.

Plant is against house so in the morning the house shades the plant, afternoon sun hits the plant straight on. For a total of 6 hours of sun.

Don't forget! Consider how you'll get water to your plants. Can your hose stretch the distance? Are you hand watering? Will you be home or on vacation?  Select a plant based on your time commitment to watering and your lifestyle for true stress-free gardening.

With a little bit of sun-savvy and hydration planning, your garden will continue to bloom!

Plant What You Love

With the above knowledge—your plant zone, sunlight requirements, and watering needs—now comes the fun part: planting the plants you love! Select plants that speak to your heart and reflect your personal style.

Whether it's vibrant hues, soothing shades, or colorful vegetables, plants come in all colors. Let your garden be an opportunity to paint a flowering canvas with you as it's Van Gogh.

So, let your imagination bloom and gardening uplift your spirits.

Happy planting!
